Eastside Arts - Supporting Live Music in Sydney
EASTSIDE ARTS is active in the protection of “live-music” in Sydney by providing artists with two unique live-music venues and participates in the development of weekly live-music events that provide employment for musicians from a culturally diverse background and for emerging artists. The acoustic ambience of the sandstone church has enhanced and housed some of the best musicians in Sydney.
Live Music Venues in Sydney are an endangered species. The combination of complicated and expensive processes to obtain the licenses in order to run a live music venue; the public relations with local residents; the expensive nature of running the venue (artist fees, promotional costs, public liability) makes it not a very economically attractive venture for many in Sydney. When you add the ingredients of ‘accessibility and affordability to all people’ – it makes it economically a very difficult venture to sustain. Then add the ingredient of a space that supports artists that are ‘emerging and culturally diverse’ into the mix and new challenges are created. It seems to us that even the more commercial attempts at running live music venues in Sydney are few and far between.
